In this article, we discuss the discipline of learning by yourself, including the benefits and tips for teaching yourself new skills. Because it involves intense reflection, it enables people to discuss educational issues openly and lay all problems on the table, investigate these problems at length, and evaluate and monitor their resolution. She left us with her lessons on ‘teaching’ self-study to those new in the field drawn from her involvement in a two-year study of a self-study research group of six experienced teacher educators from Flemish teacher education programmes . Self-learning has become a popular choice for students in recent years. With the rise of online courses and resources, it has become easier than ever to learn without a teacher. Teachers have the benefit of experience and expertise and personal feedback, which can be essential for learning. Let’s look at the pros and cons of self-learning versus learning with a teacher.
Whichever route you choose, make sure to put in the effort and focus required for success. Learning is an important part of life, so make sure to invest the time and energy necessary to get the most out of your experience. Not only do you add reading to your learning armoury when learning a second language, you also add all the study skills you have acquired. You’ve learnt how to spot patterns, to record and memorise new information, to experiment and learn from feedback. You also know why you’re learning and can target what you do more effectively. If you’re learning Medical English because you’re working in theatre in a London hospital, you’re not going to prioritise learning how to write a business report, understand Shakespeare, or how to arrange to meet someone at the cinema at the weekend. Building up receptive skills is therefore essential to understanding what a language consists of and how it works in practice.
It was a pleasure reading Evan, and it was definitely enriching , will be surely using ur practices for my evaluation process. It is evident that when you have student voices and teachers voices for an event, it becomes a collaborative effort with a lot of different opinions and ideas to consider and bring together to make the event a success. Self-study of practice is a methodology that blends all of the previously discussed methodologies (i.e., action research, narrative inquiry, autoethnography) together to examine the self-in-practice.
Language learning is a unique experience becomes more effective when learners are independent on their own and this leads to a stage where all limited teaching strictness may be lost in the faith of students. Although formal education is still the popular one in a global scale, learning needs more than ever autonomous and responsible students with the emerging power of technological developments shaping the world at a high rapid. To provide an open learning experience, the instructors should be consciously led students into areas of practising that would encourage them to study more deeply and to become a curious person.
Set goals for learning
When submitting to these stores, additional development time may be needed for minor changes to the app to meet the standards and criteria established by the distribution platforms. Building natively in iOS and Android means two separate apps need to be developed. Six hundred and fifty hours were used to develop the initial system. These logs provide them with information on the strategies, ratings, studying alone or together and time they have planned and actually spent. Extending these findings and exploring a more coherent way to scaffold both cognitive (i.e., study strategies) and metacognitive processes (i.e., planning and reflection) to improve SRL by students, we developed the Ace your self-study app .
Also, after studying, students were also prompted to report the strategies they had used and report on their affect. Broadbent et al. found positive effects in terms of resource management (i.e., time and space), metacognitive and cognitive strategies of using the domain-independent web-based SRL training module and a mobile-app in which students wrote short diary entries. Interestingly, the combination of the web-based training module and the mobile-app, was found to benefit the students’ use of SRL strategies the most.
